Forget Toto Asia: 10 Reasons Why You Do Not Need It

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could read the words. Many words were replaced by foreign ones. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto made products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the nation that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

In the 1990s Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and used the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a greater degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent in the toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than standard models.

The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) and the history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even has a bathroom that features the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before beginning the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions with various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group was formed as four members and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. Record companies placed the band on the position with the order "give us an album that is a success or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto they did with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.

This album starts off hard, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and distorted AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more powerful, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than earlier performances.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to feature a single song with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
